On May 5, 2025, at the University of Paris, the "Choose Europe for Science" initiative was officially announced, launched at the initiative of President Emmanuel Macron and with the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
This initiative responds to the need to emphasise the importance of freedom in science, the role of science in the development of civilisation, and the recognition of science as a cornerstone of democracy.
During the debate, speakers highlighted Europe’s key position in the history of scientific achievements, underscored the fundamental importance of basic research, and stressed the need for stable, long-term funding—at a level of at least 3% of GDP.
In the coming months, more specific actions under the CES (Choose Europe for Science) banner are expected to be announced. Key thematic areas will include space exploration, quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, climate, and energy.
CES programs are to be comprehensive, ranging from dedicated infrastructure streams to basic research, fast-track implementation pathways, and support for start-ups.
European University alliances and consortia are expected to play a significant role in implementing CES goals.
Poznan University of Technology was represented at the event by Professor Wojciech Sumelka, Vice-Rector for Research.
