Poznan University of Technology Develops AI for Space Applications

High-performance computing unit equipped with AI algorithms enabling autonomous satellite and lunar operations (FENG.01.01-IP.01-A15H/25)

Poznan University of Technology, together with the Consortium Leader, KP Labs, is implementing a project co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund under the European Funds for a Modern Economy Programme.

The aim of the project is to develop a system for autonomous space operations based on a high-performance vision data processing unit (DPU) equipped with new artificial intelligence algorithms. Depending on customer requirements, the system will provide one of two autonomous functionalities:

  1. autonomous, selective and lossless compression of image data on board an Earth observation satellite (satellite application);
  2. autonomous navigation decision-making by a rover operating on the surface of the Moon (lunar application).

The project will result in the development of a new computing unit featuring an innovative heat dissipation system and AI algorithms for selective data compression and autonomous rover operation. The solution addresses the growing demand for data processing directly in orbit and during planetary missions while maintaining high energy efficiency and resilience to the harsh conditions of the space environment.

The implementation of the project will enhance competitiveness in both the Polish and international markets by introducing an innovative data processing unit (DPU) together with dedicated artificial intelligence algorithms.

The target market for the developed system comprises manufacturers and integrators of micro- and minisatellites weighing between 10 and 500 kg, as well as lunar rovers. The target groups include:

  • owners and operators of satellite missions developing micro- and minisatellites;
  • satellite mission integrators;
  • lunar mission operators developing rovers.

Project implementation period: 1 March 2026 – 30 September 2029

Total project value: PLN 23,542,279.71

European Funds contribution: PLN 16,127,371.99
