Scientists from the Institute of Computing Science received the prestigious Award

Prof. Miłosz Kadziński, Prof. Grzegorz Miebs, and Prof. Roman Słowiński were honoured with the 2024 EURO Award for the Best EJOR Paper in „Theory and Methodology” category.

The award ceremony took place during the 33rd European Conference of Operational Research, which was held in Copenhagen in July 2024.

The awarded paper, titled 'Recommending multiple criteria decision analysis methods with a new taxonomy-based decision support system,' concerns a comprehensive procedure for selecting the most appropriate decision support method for a given decision problem. The article presents the MCDA-MSS software, available at http://mcdamss.com, which allows analysts to explore and describe complex decision-making processes. The developed system enables the selection of an appropriate approach from over 200 multi-criteria decision support methods, described using more than 150 features divided into four categories: decision problem, knowledge model, preference information, and expected recommendation.

The co-authors are Dr. Marco Cinelli from the University of Leiden and Dr. Michael Gonzalez from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati. The article is available in open access at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0377221722000297.

The winning paper was selected from among 1,288 articles published in 2022 and 2023 in the flagship journal dedicated to operational research, the *European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR)* (CiteScore = 11.9; Impact Factor = 6.0). From this pool, a shortlist was created, including the most cited and downloaded papers. These were evaluated by a five-member international jury appointed by EURO - the Association of European Operational Research Societies. The jury consisted of Lars-Magnus Hvattum (chair) from Norway, Bernardetta Addis from France, Valentin Bertsch from Germany, Emanuele Borgonovo from Italy, and Agostinho Agra from Portugal. In the final process, one article was ultimately selected by consensus. This is the second award of this type this year for the staff of the Decision Support Intelligent Systems Department at the Institute of Computer Science. Earlier,  Grzegorz Miebs, PhD and prof. Miłosz Kadziński received the Best Paper Award from the journal Omega – The International Journal of Management Science (CiteScore = 13.8; Impact Factor = 6.7). The awarded paper, titled “An active preference learning approach to aid the selection of validators in blockchain environments”, addresses the real-world problem of selecting active validators, which are crucial for the functioning of blockchain environments. The co-authors are Jonas Gehrlein from the Web3 Foundation in Switzerland and Dr. Matteo Brunelli from the University of Trento.
