Third Forum of European University Alliances in Wrocław

On 12–13 June, representatives of Poznan University of Technology took part in the Third Forum of European University Alliances held in Wrocław. The event was organised by the University of Wrocław within the framework of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The Forum brought together representatives of 65 university alliances, national agencies from across Europe, and the European Commission, headed by Pía Ahrenkilde Hansen, Director-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture. The event was officially opened by the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Dr Marcin Kulasek. Its aim was to review the achievements of the European University Alliances to date and to engage in a collective reflection on the future of the initiative, including key issues such as sustainable funding, student engagement, the concept of a European degree, and the role of alliances in shaping the future of European higher education.

The opening panel featured the Rector of Poznan University of Technology, Prof. Teofil Jesionowski, who highlighted the significance of PUT’s role as the only public university in Poland coordinating a European University Alliance – EUNICE. He underscored the importance of shifting from an individual, institutional mindset to a collaborative, community-oriented approach at the alliance level.

Prof. Mariusz Głabowski, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at PUT and Vice-Chair of the EUNICE AISBL Board, actively contributed to the panel discussion on the European degree. He stressed the relevance of joint degrees and integrated study programmes as vital steps toward a more cohesive European Education Area.

Magdalena Sikorska, Secretary General of EUNICE AISBL, also participated in the Forum, representing the EUNICE alliance and contributing to discussions on the strategic future of joint initiatives and the financial sustainability of European university alliances.

A highlight of the Forum for EUNICE and Poznan University of Technology was a bilateral meeting between Rector Jesionowski and Pía Ahrenkilde Hansen. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the alliance’s accomplishments, discuss ongoing challenges, and reinforce EUNICE’s position in shaping the European Education Area.

The two days were marked by insightful discussions, valuable networking opportunities, and the exchange of best practices among the European university community.
