Young Researchers from the Faculty of Materials Engineering and Technical Physics Earn Top Distinction in IBM Quantum R2P Programme

In January 2026, the "Poznan Team" consisted of:

  • Eng. Wojciech Michalak – trainee at FMETP and Master's student in the Division of Engineering and Computer-Aided Medical Diagnostics, Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Intelligent Information Systems; supervisor: Dr Gustaw Szawioła, Associate Professor at PUT
  • Marcin Klempka, MSc – research assistant at FMETP and doctoral student in the same division; supervisor: Professor Magdalena Elantkowska
  • Szymon Mieloch, MSc – doctoral student at FMETP; supervisor: Professor Danuta Stefańska, assistant supervisor: Dr Gustaw Szawioła
  • Jerzy Sobkowski, MSc – doctoral student in the same division; supervisor: Professor Przemysław Głowacki, assistant supervisor: Dr Gustaw Szawioła

The IBM Quantum R2P programme focuses on quantum computer programming. To complete the course, participants were required to demonstrate their competencies by working as a team on a programming project involving several complex challenges, including artificial intelligence and physical materials simulations.

The Poznań team distinguished itself by achieving the highest possible evaluation, receiving an Excellent rating and the maximum score of 200 points—a distinction unmatched by any other team from Poznan University of Technology.

In recognition of the quality of their work, the course organizers invited the "Poznan Team" to present their innovative solution to one of the project challenges. On behalf of the team, Eng. Wojciech Michalak delivered the presentation during the programme's plenary session.

All team members are current or former graduate students of the Division of Metrology and Quantum Engineering at the Faculty of Materials Engineering and Technical Physics. Their diploma theses—and now their doctoral research—focus on quantum engineering, quantum metrology, and quantum technologies, reflecting the University's growing expertise in this rapidly developing field.
