Huawei ICT Competition Europe 2023-2024

The Huawei ICT Competition Europe 2023-2024 awards gala was held on April 25 in Istanbul. The event was attended by over 200 students, representatives of governments and science, industry leaders and media from over 10 countries and regions of Europe. Poland was represented by 5 teams selected from students of the Poznan University of Technology.

The competition, organized by Huawei under the slogan "Connection, Glory, Future", aimed to expand students' knowledge and practical skills in the field of ICT. The Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Turkey, the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Istanbul and other important guests gave opening speeches and awarded prizes to the winning teams. The keynote speakers were also a representative of the UNESCO Global Skills Academy and a professor from the Università Politecnica delle Marche.

Jim Lu, president of Huawei for the European region, senior vice president of Huawei, noted in his opening speech that the Huawei ICT competition began in 2015, and over the past eight years, more than 700,000 distinguished people have participated in it. "Huawei is in Europe, for Europe. We highly value talent and plan to train 100,000 people over the next five years to help them realize their full potential." – Lu added.

During the event, Tide Xu, Chief Strategy Officer of Huawei Europe, reminded the audience that low-carbon development and intelligent transformation are the leading trends driving the industry, and ICT is a key element enabling a smart world. "Huawei implements projects such as ICT competitions, talent job fairs and the "Seeds for the Future" program to promote young talents. At the same time, to reduce digital exclusion, in 2019, Huawei launched TECH4ALL - a long-term initiative to pursue digital inclusion," Xu said.

Soledad Patiño, coordinator of the UNESCO Global Skills Academy, noted that initiatives such as the Huawei ICT Academy and the Huawei ICT Competition contribute to the goal of bridging the digital divide and supporting individuals and communities to thrive in an ever-changing landscape where digital skills are essential.

At the event, Poland was represented by students from the Poznan University of Technology, who formed 5 teams in the European regional finals. During the gala, 4 teams from the network track and 1 from the cloud track took the podium.

“Students of the Poznan University of Technology took part in the global stage of the Huawei ICT Competition for the third time, this time on the network and cloud paths. This year, however, is special for us due to the large group of our students who made it to the European finals. We are happy that we can provide our students with participation in this international event. I am convinced that participation in the competition will help our students achieve further success.” – prof. Piotr Zwierzykowski, the Poznań University of Technology.

On the same day, teachers and students from Huawei ICT Academy Europe also held discussions on future plans.

The 8th edition of the competition in Europe consisted of four thematic tracks: AI innovations, networking, cloud use and computing. Over 700 students from 22 countries and over 100 universities in Europe participated in the competition. The first places were taken by teams from MEF University in Turkey, the Poznan University of Technology in Poland, K Labs in Italy and the Technical University of Erzurum in Turkey. The winners from the European region will take part in the Global Finals in Shenzhen, China in May.
