Baltic University Program - conference

On April 15-18, 2024, Poznań University of Technology hosted a conference organized as part of the Baltic University Program. The theme of this unique event was "Changed circumstances and new threats to sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region."

The event attracted great interest. A record number of applications was recorded - as many as 420 students declared their willingness to participate in the conference. Ultimately, 90 students from 10 different countries qualified: Poland, Ukraine, Sweden, Czech Republic, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia, representing 47 universities.

The event was organized as part of the RESCUU (Resilience of Education: Sustainable Development and Cooperation for Ukrainian Universities) project, which aims to support Ukrainian higher education institutions, teachers, students and scientists during the war.Podczas konferencji zaprezentowano szereg ciekawych tematów, w tym:

  • Ielyzaveta Kulich discussed the war in Ukraine as a threat to radiation and nuclear security. This topic is extremely important considering the geopolitical situation and nuclear security in the region.
  •  Viktor Karamushka presented the unique features of the environmental impact after blowing up the Kakhovka dam. This is an important issue for understanding the scale and consequences of this type of activities for the natural environment.
  • Prof. Wojciech Bonenburg presented the project "We design for Ukraine. Ecological architecture and sustainable development" and the exhibition, which is the result of cooperation between the Faculty of Architecture of PUT and the Chernivtsi University of Technology.
  • Magdalena Lachowicz from the University of Adama Mickiewicza presented the results of research on "Threats from Russia and the social potential of actions for peace in the Baltic Sea region."
  • Mikael Höök from Uppsala University interested participants in research on "Current energy dependencies of the Baltic Sea region and the gradual withdrawal from fossil fuels".

Prof. Brian Tomaszewski from the Rochester Institute of Technology conducted a workshop on the migration of Ukrainian citizens. Scientist Olena Han from Kyiv Technical University, together with students, created the "UMBRELLA" model - an innovative technology for protecting energy infrastructure against explosive waves, which was an important contribution to the field of energy security.

The conference was an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, experiences and inspiration between students and scientists from different countries.

The Lecture Centre of the Poznan University of Technology became the heart of the event during the conference. The Poligrodzianie band presented Easter traditions and invited everyone to dance to the Polonaise. It was a great opportunity to learn about Polish culture and tradition.

There were also integration elements, dancing and singing together enriched the atmosphere of the conference, creating a friendly and inspiring atmosphere for all participants.

Students rated the conference highly, paying particular attention to the diversity of the program, especially the Baltic debate, social activities and the quality of accommodation and meals. The conference provided participants with valuable experiences and development opportunities, both academically and personally.
