The European project "BIONEER" is an innovative initiative within a consortium of 13 participants, which includes four universities and nine industrial partners. The project primarily aims to develop the chemical sector through the diversification of biological building blocks and platform molecules. It focuses on expanding the synthesis of innovative compounds and polymers derived from lignocellulosic biomass, using both chemical and microbiological production methods. The main target industries are the coatings, packaging and personal care industries, and the aim is to replace environmentally harmful fossil fuel-based building blocks. Projected outcomes include the production of seven new biocomponents at Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL7), recommendations for a safe and sustainable design (SSbD) framework, and the development of scientific knowledge. Furthermore, the project is expected to have significant commercial impact and deliver social benefits, positioning it as a driver for sustainable innovation in the chemical industry and contributing to a greener and more sustainable future. The university team will be led by Maciej Staszak, PhD.
