The aim of the Rural BioReFarmeries project is to demonstrate the first model of a decentralized green biorefinery and to show the possibility of its replication in rural areas in Europe to enhance their economic potential within the framework of sustainable development. The project brings together 19 partners from 8 countries. The team from Poznan University of Technology, led by prof. Piotr Oleśkowicz-Popiel, will be responsible for developing the production of organic acids from green whey on a large laboratory scale and then initiating the process on a demonstration scale. Additionally, they will conduct a technical-economic analysis of the entire green biorefinery, which, besides acids, will also produce food additives, animal feed, biodegradable packaging materials, and biogas.
